Arthur Emory Voyles
Arthur Emory Voyles, 84, passed away at his home in Crane, Missouri on Thursday, March 25th, 2021 after living a full and exemplary life.
Art was born September 28th, 1936 in Enid, Oklahoma, along with his twin sister, Ruth Ellen Voyles (Johnson), the youngest of four children. His parents were Lawrence Voyles, and Amy Ruth Stout (Voyles). Art spent most of his childhood in the Springfield area, and graduated from Central High School in 1955. He attended Harding College (now University) in Searcy, Arkansas, and graduated with his Bachelor of Music Education in 1960.
He married his first and only love, Margaret Irene Herbert, on June 4th, 1961. Into this union were born four children. Art spent most of his teaching career in southwest Missouri. He taught all ages of students how to sing, how to play, but most importantly, how to love and appreciate music. He taught in Stockton, Mountain View, Verona, Forsyth, Clever, Galena, and Morrisville. He also taught in North Richland Hills, Texas and Montgomery, Alabama.
Aside from music, Art was a passionate fan of baseball, specifically the St. Louis Cardinals. If he wasn’t able to watch them on tv, he would listen to them on the radio. He was also an avid reader, loved westerns and, or course, musicals. Art always loved a good, clean joke, puns, and comedy in general. Anyone you ask would tell you that he was a “people” person. He was involved in many community and civic organizations throughout his life including coaching Little League Baseball, Member of Lions Club International, Alderman for the city of Crane, Administrator of the Crane Senior Citizen Center, served on the board of Crane Senior Housing and Crane Nursing Home. He was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed. He volunteered for the American Cancer Society, as well as Meals on Wheels.
Not only was Art an influential music teacher, he was also a song leader, bible teacher, and preacher in the church of Christ. He had a love for the Bible, and was a committed student of theology. He served churches in any city they lived, in whatever capacity was needed. He was a member of the Union Hill church of Christ in Nixa, Missouri.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 59 years, Irene of Crane, Missouri, children: Valerie Jones (Kevin) of Bloomington, Indiana, Felicia Friebel (Tom) of Galion, Ohio, Natalie Voyles (Dave) of Battlefield, Missouri, and Matthew Voyles (Becky) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one sister, Marilyn Stegall of Hillsborough, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James, and sister, Ruth.
The family would like to thank all of the medical personnel who helped take care of Art in these last few days and weeks: Mercy Hospital in Springfield, and Integrity Home Health and Hospice.
Visitation will be Monday, March 29th, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Westrip Funeral Home, 39670 State Hwy. 413, Crane, Missouri.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, March 30th, 2021 at 2:00 at Union Hill church of Christ, 865 N. Nicholas Rd., Nixa, Missouri.
