John Edward (“Eddie”) Steele, originally of Crane, Missouri, laid down the sorrows and limitations of old age and passed from this life into the next on Monday, February 5th at St. Mary’s Hospital in Livonia, Michigan . Despite knowing the fullness of True Life that he has entered into, his family is deeply saddened at their loss and covet the thoughts and prayers of everyone in this time of mourning.
“Eddie” Steele was born and raised on a Missouri farm, and his love for his home state and his extended family never wavered. After surviving a near fatal car crash as a teenage boy attending Crane High School, Eddie graduated in 1954, then moved to Columbia to attend his beloved University of Missouri. After university he spent a few years in the Army, a few years in San Francisco, and a few years in St. Louis before work finally brought him to the suburbs of Detroit where he settled for the remainder of his life. Eddie was active in his church and took numerous mission trips both before and after his retirement from General Motors. He loved to golf, read, watch sports of every kind, and support his children and grandchildren in whatever they were doing. He did his best to return to his home town every year in August to attend the Crane Broiler Festival, and always remained a farm boy at heart.
Eddie is survived by his beloved sister Kay Bequette, his younger brothers Harold (Leann) Steele and Gary (Sandy) Steele, his children Gregory Steele, Sharon Steele, Jon Steele and Derrick (Robyn) Steele, and his step-children Cynthia (Greg) Johnson and Stephanie Caldwell. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren: Jordan, Gabriel, Janie, Ethan, Mason, Caden, Tristan, Nathaniel, Cody, Gwendolyn and great-grandchildren Lotus, Nico, and Steele.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Crane Community Cemetery Crane, Missouri under the care of Westrip Funeral Home Crane, Missouri Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m.
