ELLA MARIE COOK
Marie Cook, 91, of Springfield, Missouri went home to be with the Lord on September 29, 2018. Marie was the oldest child of Rillis and Carrie (Whiteleather) Maples and was born July 14, 1927
at Josh and Molly Maples' farmhouse at the Mouth of Wheeler on the James River. Marie learned early to help out on the farm with the milking, gardening, butchering, laundry, etc. Four brothers and a sister later joined the family: Leon, who died at 9 months, Howard, Ray Lynn, Carol Lee, and Ruth Ann.
Marie and her dad often checked cattle and worked crops down at the river. Jim Cook, 14, lived at the Kerr Ranch across the James and fell in love with the little blonde girl in overalls. After
graduating from Crane High School in 1945, they married and enjoyed 67 years of marriage. Marie and Jim built a little house with their families' help, began raising children, and living a life of loving service to their family, church, and community.
After teaching school at Cave Springs for a year, Marie served as a bookkeeper for the MFA Farmers Exchange and the Crane Garmet Factory for several years. One of Marie's many gifts was cooking and hospitality which was put to good use in the kitchen at church. She loved to try new recipes, but her cookies, coney sauce, and biscuits were legendary. Upon retirement, Marie found a new creative outlet with china painting. Wild roses were her specialty, and she enjoyed her china clubs and teaching other painters her techniques.
Marie is survived by daughters Pat Allen and Pam Collins (Terry) and son Bob Cook (Ginny);
eight grandchildren: Eric Allen, Matt Allen, Jason Collins, Jon Collins, Taylor Collins, Ryan Cook, Jared Cook, and Lindsey Cook Alsup; as well as twelve great grandchilren and one great great grandson. Marie was predeceased by her husband Jim Cook and brother Howard Maples. The family thanks Jeni Miller for her loving care and friendship in Marie's final years.
Visitiation will be from 1-2:30 pm Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Crane, Missouri with services at 2:30 pm and burial following at the Crane Cemetery under the care of Westrip Funeral Home, Crane, Missouri.
The family has requested that any memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or your local church.
