George William Gatton died in his home in Crane Missouri at the age of 80 on January3
George is survived by wife Helen, and three children and their spouses: Jeanie (Kevin) of Ozark, William (Linda) of Phillipsburg and John (Shelly) of Crane. He enjoyed having 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. George is also survived by 5 sisters: Mary , Margaret, Evelyn, Kathy and Elizabeth. Two siblings preceded him in death: Richard in 1936 and Ruth in 2015.
George was born on September 20, 1936 to Harlan and Edna Mourning Gatton at Flat Creek Missouri. After graduating from Crane, he attended the University of Missouri. George married Helen Elizabeth Baker on September 21, 1956 at the Crane Presbyterian Church and they celebrated 60 years of marriage in September 2016.
George served in many organizations including the Crane School Board, Land Bank and MFA boards in Crane and Aurora. A lifelong farmer, George most enjoyed watching things grow. The original family farm was known as the Five G farm, later becoming Apple Hill Dairy when his sons John and William joined the operation. Up to 800 acres were under his management at one time while milking 200 cows. He continued to actively farm until his 80th birthday while still advising his sons and grandsons on farm management.
To honor his memory, the family requests memorial donations be made to: Crane Community Cemetery or Crane Presbyterian Church in care of the funeral home.
He was an elder and lifelong member of the Crane Presbyterian Church. A funeral is scheduled for January 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Crane Presbyterian Church under the care of Westrip Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Crane Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be from12:00 until service time at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
